Nortel 616 (6 line by 16 Station Key Service Unit)

The Nortel 616 (or 6x16) is a Norstar Meridian key service unit. It is an entry level low cost control unit targeted to small offices with fixed budgets and little need for the expandability or improved features offered in some of the more contemporary units such as the Nortel 308, Compact ICS, or Nortel Modular ICS. The 616 fully supports all Meridian 7000 series and Terminal 7000 series telephones.

Revisions, Versions, Addons and Upgrades

The 616 cabinet comes in two varieties - 616 with Disconnect Supervision or DS, and 616 Non-DS. The DS version is able to see when a line has been terminated and hang up immediately - because of this the DS is more suitable for, and recommended for use with, voicemail.

Software cartridges - which control system programming and features - slide into the 616 control unit in the upper left hand side. Several revisions of software are available for the 616 KSU: DR1, DR2, DR5, DR5.1, and for the DS version of the cabinet DR5 DS. Though the 616 DS version will take Non-DS software Disconnect Supervision will not function with this configuration.

The 616 has a C6 addon which upgrades the cabinet to support Caller ID lines - but the upgrade is buggy and somewhat problematic and availability is very scarce.

Cabinet Connections

The cabinet has 7 analog jacks, power connector, and 66 Block Amphenol connector. 6 of the analog phone jacks (located bottom left) are used for incoming lines which should be connected starting at the bottommost jack. The final analog jack is a single line emergency phone which is active only when the cabinet loses power.
